“Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.” — Sheryl Sanberg, COO of Facebook

Compassionate Leadership…

This month we are exploring compassionate leadership that includes: Love, Respect and Gender Equality.

When we are without …

Many of us have had situations when we didn’t feel cared for by our immediate leader or an organization where we worked.

Feeling un-cared for and in some cases less-than, we feel disconnected and resign ourselves to fly under the radar, instead of going above and beyond and tapping into our discretionary energy. This drives us into a scarcity mindset, and we become focused on surviving the day. That is an unhealthy work life to be in.

While we are ultimately in charge of our own well-being, leadership that illuminates a disconnect from compassion and respect, can create a breeding ground for unhealthy work environments which can perpetuate this mindset from the top on down.

Creating a culture of compassion …

Some tips for becoming a compassionate leader:

  1. Empathy: show you care by seeking to understand where others are coming from.
  2. Humility: be inclusive and ask others to join into the conversation, thus appreciating what everyone brings to the table.
  3. Listen: be present when you’re with people. Listen to what they are saying both verbally and non-verbally. There is a lot in the space between words
  4. Role Model: people look at what leaders do more than what they say. Model the environment you want to build.
  5. Gratitude: a simple thank you that is genuine and specific, means more than can be calculated. It is the way you make people feel that stands the test of time.

We all are leaders, whether we lead others or not. We impact the world around us. However, if you formally lead, the burden to create the environment for your staff is critical to the success of the teams you lead.

Final thoughts

When we lead with compassion, love, respect and equity, we create a positive and inclusive environment that increases employee engagement and company success.

Make a difference to the world around you and Shine Brightly!

Shine Brightly!
